Martha Dry Johnson of Kutztown talks about her mother Sarah Bagby Dry December 12, 2011 7:30pm at Headquarters
As Martha writes to us in her own words…….“I will talk about my mother, who was the first female Aide-de-Camp to a general in the Army.
She worked with General Carl (Tooey) Spaatz, who hailed from Boyertown, and was in Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war he worked in the Pentagon and became the first secretary of the Air Force when it separated from the Army. Born in New Haven, MO, she was the baby of 12 children born to her parents. She spent 3 years with Gen. Spaatz, traveling from North Africa to Italy, England, France, Germany, Guam and finally to the Pentagon. She was present at the signing of the treaty with Germany in Berlin as well as the signing with Japan on the USS Missouri. Only a select group of people can say they were at both those events. She traveled extensively with the general and was privy to most everything he was involved in. I have approximately 100 letters that she wrote to her family, detailing the events of the war. These are from her perspective as a female working with the decision makers of the war. The list of people she met include IKE, Kay Summersby, Jimmy Doolittle, George Patton, David Niven, etc. In addition to sharing the information in her letters I will bring along photographs and other items of interest. Her story is unique and I am in the process of writing a book. I plan on giving everyone a taste of what is to come.”
